Fran’s note: We are drawn to the mystery of ruins and their connection to cultural history. As we imagine what the place may have been like once upon a time, our imagination runs wild. From this notion I developed the design for Wizard of Oz to take our imagination through Dorothy’s dreams. With mass ensemble performers between 500-900 strong in some cities, there was no room for scenery changes in each arena. The arena design for this show needed to take the audience from Kansas to Emerald City and everywhere in between. The ruins were brought to life with equisite illustrations by Elizabeth Botte, annimation by Optikal Bloc and Trudy Dalgleish’s extraordinary lighting design.
